Week 1: Cultivating a Culture of Prayer and Fasting

Scripture Reading: Psalm 35:11-16
Key Verse: Psalm 35:13
…I put on sackcloth and humbled myself with fasting.
King David, the sweet psalmist of Israel, fully understood the necessity of fasting in a spiritual pilgrimage. The psalmist humbled his soul with fasting. He dealt with the inner man by stripping away pride and arrogance with a spiritual discipline – fasting. Scripture tells us that God opposes the proud but give grace to the humble (James 4:6). A humble heart is attractive to the Father and pleases Him to release grace. Fasting is adjusting the focus off our material security and trusting in Him for our protection and provision. It is living out, “He must become greater; I must become less” (John 3:30). Fasting helps to humble you by repositioning your gaze on the one who gives you everything.

Are you struggling with pride or finding it hard to place your faith completely on Jesus? Begin your journey like King David by humbling your soul with fasting.

Prayer Points
  • Ask God to expose areas of pride or self-sufficiency in your life and come to God in humble repentance as He reveals them to you.
  • Ask God to give you a humble spirit.
  • Pray “Jesus must become greater and I must become less.”
